Volta – 100% Electric Work Vessel & Floating Powerbank

In close collaboration with Groeneveldt Marine Constructions, and on behalf of Martens en Van Oord, Gebhard Electro delivered the full electrical scope for the Volta – a fully electric, zero-emission work vessel designed for independent dredging and maintenance operations.

With a 2.2 MWh battery system, a floating DC bus and smart energy distribution, Volta is not only able to power itself during a full working day, but also functions as a mobile powerbank for heavy electrical equipment such as excavators placed on pontoons or quaysides.

Smart Design, Fast Delivery

Gebhard Electro was involved from the early concept phase, designing a flexible AC/DC architecture to meet the vessel’s operational needs. This includes the ability to supply external loads with diverse power requirements — from standard CEE connectors to high-power equipment.

Thanks to the open collaboration and trust between all partners, Volta went from order to launch in just nine months. No heavy contract structures, just clear goals, short lines, and technical commitment.

Remote Intelligence & Support

All systems are integrated into a central AMCS platform, developed by Gebhard Electro using Praxis Automation software. The system allows full remote access for performance monitoring, diagnostics, and support.

“This vessel had to be more than just electric — it had to be smart, flexible, and reliable. That’s what we built.”
Gerard Kraaij, Managing Director, Gebhard Electro

Results

  • Zero emissions during operations

  • Powerbank function for external tools and equipment

  • Fast charging via high-capacity shore power

  • Intelligent load balancing and remote monitoring

  • Ready for future integration and expansion

Looking Forward

The launch of Volta fits Martens en Van Oord’s broader ambition to reduce environmental impact in dredging and infrastructure. The success of this project lays the foundation for future innovation — including potential all-electric crane vessels already under consideration.

“This project proves what’s possible with Dutch innovation, trust, and determination.”
Tobias van Oord, Director/Owner, Martens en Van Oord
